CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Crews continue to clear land and prepare for the construction of a new road at the Exploration Park site near the Space Life Sciences Laboratory (SLSL) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The first phase will encompass 60 acres just outside Kennedy’s security gates. Nine buildings will provide 350,000-square feet of work space, including educational, office, research and lab, and high-bay facilities. Each building is expected to be certified in the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED). Exploration Park is designed to be a strategically located complex, adjacent to the SLSL, for servicing diverse tenants and uses that will engage in activities to support space-related activities of NASA, other government agencies and the U.S. commercial space industry. It also is expected to bring new aerospace work to the Space Coast. The SLSL will be the anchor facility for the park, which is expected to open its first new facility in early 2012. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Construction continues on the Doppler weather radar facility for the 45th Weather Squadron being built in an area near S.R. 520 in Orange County, Florida. The new site will replace one at Patrick Air Force Base and will be used by NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the 45th Space Wing and their customers. The site will be able to monitor weather conditions directly above the launch pads at Kennedy. The weather radar is essential in issuing lightning and other severe weather warnings and vital in evaluating lightning launch commit criteria. The new radar, replacing what was installed 25 years ago at Patrick Air Force Base, includes Doppler capability to detect winds and identify the type, size and number of precipitation particles. The site is ideally distant from the launch pads and has unobstructed views of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Kennedy. The radar will be used by forecasters at the USAF 45th Weather Squadron. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Progress is evident in the Constellation Program at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, as the first section of a tower is secured to a new mobile launcher, or ML. The tower of the mobile launcher will have multiple platforms for personnel access and will be approximately 345 feet tall. The launcher is being built at the mobile launcher park site area located north of Kennedy's Vehicle Assembly Building to support the Ares I rocket. The ML will provide a base to launch the Ares I which will transport the Orion crew exploration vehicle, its crew and cargo to low Earth orbit. The base is being made lighter than space shuttle mobile launcher platforms so the crawler-transporter can pick up the heavier load of the tower and taller rocket.
