Immedi-ately below these bunkers, on a platform soconstructed that it can be supplied from themby gravity chutes, a Smith rotary concretemixer of I ! cubic feet capacity was installed.It is geared to a small induction motor and isequipped with compensator and starting box.The concrete after being mixed is run to thelevel of the foundations through a ten inchriveted steel pipe, a part of the same whichwas used to supply the hydraulic monitor withwater in the earlier work of excavation. Atthe lower end of the pipe, a small hopper witha capacity of one yard, was placed, whencethe mix was drawn off in two wheeled bug-gies and distributed to the various parts ofthe plant. When everything runs smoothlyand without mishap, the mixing outfit will turnout an average of a batch every two minutesor 330 cubic feet an hour or about I 10 yards

Such ideal conditionsdont work out in practice and the best theplant has done is about 80 yards. The first piece of machinery installed was aJoshua Hendy, double stage air compressorbelted to a 1 00 horsepower electric inductionmotor. This supplied compressed air at 1 20pounds pressure for use in running the ma-chine drills for blasting, the small hoist thatserved the crusher plant, the air guns used inriveting the steel frame of the building, andfor blowing the smoke out of the tunnels aftera round of blasts. This heavy machinery was let down the hillside on rough skids andsnubbed from tree to tree with ropes, beingtransported thus before the main tramwaywas completed. The foundations were all completed andthe steel frame of the buildmg erected andriveted before the winter storms made it neces-sary to shut down the work.
