Oxford Circus (22891646886) (before 1920)

description

Summary

This is a Louis Levy postcard from about 1904 showing Oxford Circus looking east towards New Oxford Street. The very early motor bus is turning right into New Oxford Street from Regent Street and an officer from Vine Street police station is directing traffic. There is also an officer on the pavement centre right on a 'Fixed Point', these were locations where citizens knew that they could find a Police Constable. In Dickens's Dictionary of London (1888) this fixed point's location is described " Oxford Street-Circus, corner of Swallow Street, south side of Oxford Street, west of Regent Street. This was a very busy location as can be seen from the photograph.

The automobile was first invented and perfected in Germany and France in the late 1890s. Americans quickly came to dominate the automotive industry after WWI. Throughout this initial era, the development of automotive technology was rapid. Hundreds of small manufacturers competing to gain the world's attention. Key developments included the electric ignition system, independent suspension, and four-wheel brakes. Transmissions and throttle controls were widely adopted and safety glass also made its debut. Henry Ford perfected mass-production techniques, and Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler emerged as the “Big Three” auto companies by the 1920s. Car manufacturers received enormous orders from the military during World War II, and afterward automobile production in the United States, Europe, and Japan soared.
