Away atthe edge of the jungle a flock of peafowlsounded their loud alarm-cries, whichrang echoing among the tree trunks; alittle later a jungle cock crowed and wasanswered by another and another in different directions. These sounds hadlittle interest for the leopard, as the birdsmaking them were all too far away. Idlyhe watched the quarreling parrots andlistened to the bird sounds and graduallythe hot day drew to a close. Just atdusk as the day sounds were ceasing andthe chorus of frogs and other nocturnalcreatures was commencing, he caught aglimpse of a movement among the tan-gled vines overhead. One of the large, curious, gourd-shaped fruits which hung thickly fromthe branches of the next tree seemed tocome to life. The round lower partsuddenly opened, and from one side ahead appeared, while opposite a tail un-furled.
