rhangingbrush and poling the canoes against thecurrent. C. W. Browns canoe swampedin a whirlpool and a little savage thathe was bringing along as a curio wasswept under some drift and came to thesurface about a hundred yards below, hanging to an oar, and was saved byclinging to some brush about a half-miledownstream. Many of our effects werelost, and others ruined by the water, including most of my photo films, whoseloss I deeply deplored. The rest of our journey was merely arepetition of danger and hardships in therapids; a number of times we had to un-load our boats and several close calls wehad from drowning. To dilate on all ofour experiences would make this narrationtedious. We reached the junction of theTavora and the West the latter part ofOctober, fagged out, with sore feet andscratched and insect-bitten features, andultimately arrived at the outskirts of civili-zation, all thankful for our safe return, andconvinced that it was the most interestingand exciting trip of our lives.
