alue. It soon be-came apparent to those mak-ing a study of stock raisingthat these animals would bemore productive when housedin warm buildings, and thisis what has brought about themodern barn. It is true that the warm room has increasedthe product, for example, theflow of milk from the dairycow; but this warm, tightbuilding has also broughtabout a condition that breedsdisease; and the disease isproving to be a menace tolive stock and mankind. It has been proved that pureair is two-thirds of a cowsration; in other words, forevery pound of feed and water combined that is consumedit requires the oxygen fromtwo pounds of pure air toproperly assimilate this feed.It is true that no farm stockbuildings are air tight; butif the stock can get only one-half the required amount ofpure air, it would have thesame effect as if they weregiven only a part of the feedand water they naturally re-quire to sustain life andmake them productive. Woodlawn Farm, located seven miles north of OWATONNA, MINNESOTA. buildings in recent years, butit appears that conditionshave not been improved toany extent, as shown by theannual report of the live stockdepartment of one of ourstates. In the year ending August15, 1915, there were about8 to 10 per cent of the cattleof this state tested for tuber-culosis and 1,495 cattle werecondemned, for which thisstate paid the owners about$35,000.00, but which werereally worth about $75,000.00.This loss alone is a loss to the dairy interests of thatone state of $40,000.00, andthis on a test that only cov-ered about 10 per cent of thecattle in the state. It has also been proved thatno matter how much care istaken in testing, there arestill some animals that donot react to the test who havethe disease, for in one of theherds of this same state in itsown experimental barns, itwas found recently that seven-teen of the animals reacted tothe tuberculine test, althoughall of them were very care- fully tes
