THE PANOPTICON, IN 1S54. got up under the auspices of several philanthropicindividuals as a joint-stock undertaking. But thespeculation did not answer, and after a few yearsthe company broke up. The building was closed fora time, and then re-opened under the name bywhich it is at present known. It is at once atheatre and a music-hall. It consists of a spaciousauditorium, with three tiers of galleries, and astage particularly adapted for the representation of111-Vol. III. object. The chief feature of the interior is therotunda, formed by tiers of galleries, and horseshoe-shaped arches supporting the several galleries.
