Nouvelle place de la Bastille - A drawing of a man holding a baby in front of a group of people

description

Summary

Cartoon shows Louis XVI standing on a pedestal with one foot on the hydra of despotism(?) from which five of seven heads have been severed; on the left, a clergyman offers him a gold coin, and on the right, a Spanish nobleman tears a paper labeled "Fin du Regime Feódal." A nursing woman, representing France, is seated in the foreground with three small figures, possibly representing the Three Estates.

Possibly purchased by George IV from William Holland in 1790. Source: Kate Heard, Royal Collection Trust, Windsor Castle.

Forms part of: French Political Cartoon Collection (Library of Congress).
