Consumers, of course, usually buy rationed items in the form described in the consumer table and use points accordingly. But if a consumer wishes to buy an item in the larger form described in the trade table, he may do so. In that case he pays points on the basis of the trade table

The official table of consumer point values, supplied to retailers by the OPA (Office of Price Administration), gives the answers. It can be obtained from the local post office. The law requires all retailers to post this table where everyone can see it easily

When the weight of a rationed product does not come out to even pounds, the point fraction table at the bottom of the official consumer table show point values for ounces. If the odd weight comes out to a fraction of a point, a retailer can collect an extra point if it is a half point or more. But if it is less, the customer does not need to give up an additional point

And, in the end, all points must flow back to the OPA (Office of Price Administration) to be accounted for. Every buyer of foods under this program must give points for them. And in every case the primary distributor--such as the slaughterer, cheese or butter manufacturer, fish canner, refiner of edible fats or oils and many processors--must give the Office of Price Administration an account of sales and turn over points received

Not only retailers, but institutions, industrial users, wholesalers, and primary distributors will usually buy rationed items in the form listed in the trade table and pay the points required by this table. However, when a retailer or anyone else wishes to buy a rationed item in the form listed in the consumer table, he will pay points on the basis of the consumer table
