North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum), Grand Teton National Park, 2013.
Summary
This animal may also be called the Canadian porcupine or common porcupine. Its common name 'porcupine' comes from the old French word for 'quill pig', which is yet another colloquial name for this animal. It is the second largest rodent in North America, only smaller than the beaver. It is nearsighted, slow-moving and mostly nocturnal. In summer, they can often be seen resting in trees.
