New fathometer used at full speed. Washington, D.C., May 7. Dr. Herbert Grove Dorsey of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey has invented an instrument to secure the precise measurement. The machine sends a sound, pitched so high that it is above audibility, traveling thru the water a known speed, the sound hits the bottom and returns as an echo at 20 times per second. The fathometer is so accurate that a change in depth of three inches can be detected. the indications are made by a flash from a neon tube, viewed thru a rotating disc, the flash of light appearing to stand still and the depth is read as easily as a clock. The instrument indicator is installed in the pilot house (at the top of the machine) and the transceiver (the disc at the right of the machine [?]) is located in the hull of the ship, 5/7/1937

The National Bureau of Standards has recently developed for the U.S. Navy Meteorological Service a new radio meteorograph. The new instrument (shown in the picture) is sent up on a 5-Foot balloon and is expected to replace the use of airplanes in upper-air meteorological surroundings. E.G. Lapham, Associate Physicist of the bureau, is shown assembling the new meteorograph in preperation for an ascent. The device transmits audio notes which are a function of temperature and humidity. These notes are interrupted at approximately each 10-millibar increment in pressure, thus identifying each temperature and humidity indication with its respective increment of altitude, 6937

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A crimson and gold sunrise over the Central Florida coast begins illuminating Launch Pad 39A, where a water sound suppression test is to take place. This test is being conducted following the replacement of the six main system valves, which had been in place since the beginning of the Shuttle Program and had reached the end of their service life. Also, the hydraulic portion of the valve actuators has been redesigned and simplified to reduce maintenance costs. The sound suppression water system is installed on the launch pads to protect the orbiter and its payloads from damage by acoustical energy reflected from the MLP during launch. The system includes an elevated water tank with a capacity of 300,000 gallons. The tank is 290 feet high and stands on the northeast side of the Pad. The water is released just before the ignition of the orbiter’s three main engines and twin solid rocket boosters, and flows through parallel 7-foot-diameter pipes to the Pad area. KSC-04pd1077

Measuring relative humidity by radio. Washington, D.C. June 9. The hair element for measuring relative humidity in radio weather sounding balloons has proved innacurate because of very slow response at the cold temperatures encountered in the upper atmosphere. F.W. Dunmore, Radio Engineer of National Bureau of Standards, has just developed a new device for the U.S.Navy which will overcome this effect and at the same time will not be affected in response by temperature. He is shown in the photograph observing a graph on the recorder being produced by radio signals from an ascending balloon carrying the new device. This is the first record obtained with this new developement and shows a repidity of response much greater than the hair hygrometers Hitherto used. 6/9/37

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- Under wispy white clouds, Space Shuttle Atlantis slowly moves toward the Rotating and Fixed Service Structures on Launch Pad 39A. The 80-foot-tall white lighting mast is seen atop the FSS. Atlantis will fly on mission STS-98, the seventh construction flight to the International Space Station, carrying the U.S. Laboratory, named Destiny. The lab will have five system racks already installed inside the module. After delivery of electronics in the lab, electrically powered attitude control for Control Moment Gyroscopes will be activated. Atlantis is scheduled for launch no earlier than Jan. 19, 2001, with a crew of five KSC01pp0015

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - In the Orbiter Processing Facility, Bill Prosser (left) and Eric Madaras, NASA-Langley Research Center, and Jim McGee (right), The Boeing Company, Huntington Beach, Calif., conduct impulse tests on the right wing leading edge (WLE) of Space Shuttle Endeavour. The tests monitor how sound impulses propagate through the WLE area. The data collected will be analyzed to explore the possibility of adding new instrumentation to the wing that could automatically detect debris or micrometeroid impacts on the Shuttle while in flight. The study is part of the initiative ongoing at KSC and around the agency to return the orbiter fleet to flight status.

The Advanced Electric Ship Demonstrator (AESD), Sea Jet, funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), a 133-foot vessel located at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division, Acoustic Research Detachment in Bayview, Idaho (ID). Sea Jet will operate on Lake Pend Oreille, where it will be serve as a model representing a destroyer size surface ship to test and demonstrate various technologies. Among the first technologies tested is an underwater discharge water jet from Rolls-Royce Naval Marine, Inc., called AWJ-21, a propulsion concept with the goals of providing increased propulsive efficiency, reduced acoustic signature, and improved maneuverability over previous Destroyer...

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Pictured is equipment that will be used on an undersea expedition to characterize the condition of the deep-sea coral reefs and reef fish populations in the Oculina Banks, a marine protected area, 20 miles offshore of the east coast of Florida. Scientists on the team will be deploying an underwater robot, a seafloor sampler, and the Passive Acoustic Monitoring System (PAMS). Dr. Grant Gilmore was co-principle investigator of the PAMS, originally developed by NASA to monitor the impact of rocket launches on wildlife refuge lagoons at KSC. The research is sponsored by NOAA Fisheries and will take place onboard the Liberty Star. The ship departed from Port Canaveral April 29 and will return May 9. KSC-03pd1377
