The animals comprised in this branch of zoology differ■widely in external form. They range from the minutehydroids which encrust stones at low water to the beautifulstone-building corals, the brilliant sea anemones, and thecurious jelly-fishes. Some are stationary for life, whileothers swim about from place to place. Some live on thesurface of the ocean, while others live at the bottom of thesea, in very deep water. With the exception of a fewsmall hydroids, all are marine, and the majority of theselive near the shores of continents and islands.
