Mosaic of Clouds from ESSA-5 satellite

description

Summary

This digital mosaic of cloud pictures was taken by the Environmental Science Services Administration (ESSA) 5 satellite on September 14, 1967. It shows more than a dozen storm areas, including hurricanes Beulah, Dora, Chloe, Monica, and Nannette. The picture signals, received in analog form from the satellite, were sampled at short time intervals, and numbers were assigned according to the brightness indicated by the basic signal. The computer then located each digital value and precise map location. The computer tape containing this information was then displayed on a television-like tube (kinescope) and photographed. The result, a mosaic. The first ESSA satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 3, 1966. ESSA-5 was launched April 20, 1967 and, after 738 days of operation on orbit, was deactivated on February 20, 1970.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. –Outredgeous red romaine lettuce plants grow inside in a prototype VEGGIE flight pillow. The bellows of the hardware have been lowered to better observe the plants. A small temperature and relative humidity data logger is placed between the pillows small white box, central. U.S. astronauts living and working aboard the International Space Station are going to receive a newly developed Vegetable Production System VEGGIE. VEGGIE is set to launch aboard SpaceX's Dragon capsule on NASA's third Commercial Resupply Services mission targeted to launch Dec. 9 from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) booster is lowered toward a workstand in Kennedy Space Center's Vertical Processing Facility. The IUS will be mated with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and then undergo testing to validate the IUS/Chandra connections and check the orbiter avionics interfaces. Following that, an end-to-end test (ETE) will be conducted to verify the communications path to Chandra, commanding it as if it were in space. With the world's most powerful X-ray telescope, Chandra will allow scientists from around the world to see previously invisible black holes and high-temperature gas clouds, giving the observatory the potential to rewrite the books on the structure and evolution of our universe. Chandra is scheduled for launch July 22 aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, on mission STS-93 KSC-99pp0619
