It was worn by deacons upon the left shoulder;the one likens it to the towel with which our Saviour washedthe Apostles feet, the other sees in it a likeness to the angelswings. The stole worn by presbyters and bishops had another origin,and one which explains the different modes in which it wasworn. It also was called orarium by the Latins, but by theGreeks, more significantly, Tre.piTpaxrjXLov, iirLTpaxyXi-ov. Unlikethe linteum, it was of white wool or colored silk; it naturallytook the form of a scarf, and it must originally have been worn,as it is to-day, around the neck and under the chasuble, for itwas properly a neck-cloth. One must remember that the dal-matic and the psenula had apertures too broad to afford anyprotection to the neck, and that even the tunic was without acollar. protect the neck from the cohl, and it appears, too, that a senseof decency, or at least of dignity, prescribed that the neck becovered. A neck-scarf was not an uncommonelement of dressabout the end of the Empire, and from that isderived the ovarium of presbyters and bishops.AVhen the deacons orariiim had become a mereornamental scarf, it differed from that of thepresbyter only in the mode in which it wasworn, and consequently in the ordination ofpriests it was only necessary to alter its posi-tion. The earliest representation of the epis-copal stole is offered by a mosaic of the firsthalf of the sixth century at Ravenna. Presby-ters generally wore the stole in the same manneras the bishops; the practice of crossing it uponthe breast is ancient, but did not come into gen-eral use till a late period. The monuments prove that the commonermode of carrying the serving towel was uponthe left shoulder; but that was manifestly notthe only way it could be carried, and the monu-ments also show
