Medley print. The jolly broom man's garland, British Cartoon Print

description

Summary

Montage of prints, text, and musical notation includes title page to song book "The jolly broom man's garland;" and small prints of birds, people, architecture, religion, and commedia dell'arte.

In unpublished P&P checklist, "British Political and Social Caricatures, 1655-1832 ... not in the published catalogs of the British Museum," compiled in 1968 (NC 1470.M4. Vol. 2).

Not found in British Museum Catalogue (BMC).

Previously dated 1655 probably because a fragment depicted on the print contains that date; currently dated between 1753 and 1764 based on the years that John Bowles and his son, Carrington Bowles, worked together at the Black Horse, Cornhill, London.

Most images available on microfilm, "British Political and Social Cartoons, 1655-1832, not in the British Museum," produced by the Library of Congress Photoduplication Service, 1970 (Microfilm LOT 12022). Unpublished checklist provides captions for images.

Forms part of: British Cartoon Prints Collection (Library of Congress).
