Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Marine Barracks, Cedar Avenue, west side between Twelfth & Fourteenth Streets, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: Building M37 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. It is the focal point of the Marine Corps compound at Mare Island and is among the most impressive buildings anywhere within the Mare Island Historic District. Historically, it was the barracks and headquarters for the Marine Corps compound between 1917 and the 1990s, the time of the removal of the Marine detachment. Architecturally, this huge reinforced concrete building is a good expression of classically styled Beaux Arts design. The severity of the reinforced concrete mass is mitigated through the use of neoclassical detail, including its rusticated base, segmental arched windows, and dormers across the length of the roofline.
