Significance: Heiau were important structures on the Hawaiian landscape, because they served as temples for offerings and sacrifices to the gods. Mailekini Heiau may be associated with the conflicts that took place between Hawaiian chiefs prior to the establishment of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810 by Kamehameha I. In addition, it is significant for its conversion into a fort after 1810 as Kamehameha secured his power and interests.
