Lot-741-13: U.S. Coast Guard, WWII. Admiral Decorates Coast Guard TARR. Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, USN, bestows the Silver Star for “gallantry and intrepidity in action” on Coast Guardsman Daniel J. Tarr in ceremonies aboard ship somewhere in the Southwest Pacific. Tarr, described by fellow Coast Guardsmen as a darn good tar, was Coxswain of a landing barge at Tulagi in the Solomons. After landing his Marine contingent without loss in the face of the hot Japanese fire, he made several more trips with ammunition. Coast Guardsman Tarr comes from Chincoteague Island, Virginia.
