Looking down on New York's skyscrapers from Woolworth Tower over Battery to Statue of Liberty and Harbour - after 1913

description

Summary

Written on reverse:.A noble view of the tallest buildings in the world and one of the world's greatest harbours. You are looking southwest over the end of Manhattan Island and over the harbour of New York towards the shores of New Jersey. On the right, in the middle distance, you can see on Bedloe Island the Sataue of Liberty. Just to the right and outside the view is Ellis Island. Governor's Island is the larger body of land that you see in part at the extreme left. The large body of land in the distance is Staten Island. Beyond this and to the left is Sandy Hook where guns for the defense of the harbour are placed..In the immediate foreground are the great skyscrapers crowded upon what appears to be a narrow street. The street is not narrow at all, but only looks so because of the buildings that tower above it. This is Broadway, one of the most famous streets in the world. You can see that it ends in a little park. This is Bowling Green and the low round building is the Aquarium. In this little building are gathered together in pools and glass cases, hundreds of kinds of fish..The tall building with the beautiful spire is the Singer Building, 612 feet high. This was the tallest building in the world until the Woolworth Building was constructed..The Woolworth Building rises 792 feet above the sidewalk. Add to this the sub-basements and foundations and the entire building, from bedrock to its uppermost tip is 913 feet. The Woolworth Building consists of 57 stories. Its floor space covers 40 acres. Twenty-eight elevators carry back and forth the many people who have their offices in this building. 80,000 electric lights are needed to illuminate it.
