The Battle of the Coral Sea was a series of naval engagements, between the U.S. and Australia against Japan, which occurred May 4 to May 8, 1942 on the northeast coast of Australia. The ceremony reflects cooperation to promote global and regional peace and prosperity between the Marine Corps and the Australian Defence Force to continue our tradition of more than 100 years of global partnerships and security cooperation. Dougherty is the commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, Marine Rotational Force – Darwin. Chestnut is the sergeant major of 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, MRF-D.
