Letter from Richard Davis Webb, Dublin, [Ireland], to Mary Anne Estlin, 1851 Oct[ober] 14

description

Summary

Richard Davis Webb writes to Mary Anne Estlin in regards to asking her to send a copy of a book by Bigelow on to Miss Weston. He writes of an omission in a letter to Garrison printed in the Examiner. He thanks her for her father's letter. He comments on the friends who are "good sort of people but there is very little independence of mind among them-and they are often extremely timid & shallow." He has just read Miss Weston's letter to her and finds it deeply interesting. He finds it odd that Caroline Weston should be in "such estimation with the ministers." He agrees with her about Robert Charleton's character, saying, "such people are like eels. You think you have them fast by some appeal to facts or to conscience, when..they slip through your fingers."
