Letter from Julia A. Tappan, New York, to Anne Warren Weston, 1837 May 13

Julia A. Tappan writes to Anne Warren Weston in regards to the petitions Anne was intending to circulate in New England. She writes, "you cannot print petitions to the State Legislatures on the same sheets with those to Congress, and there will be an additional expense in circulation them separately. If you have any plan you will oblige me very much by communicating it to me." She writes that Sarah Moore Grimke does not believe she accomplishes as much for the cause when she travels with her sister. If she was nominated she would have devoted herself to petitioning. Anne can send petitions and publications to Mrs. O'Brien and Mrs. Sarah J. Smith, who has been active in the cause of Northampton, Massachusetts. She writes that times are so hard, printers will demand immediate payment for the petitions and circulars. She regrets that they can print only 500 each of Angelina Emily Grimke's "Appeal" and her sister's address. She requests a copy of the petition which Anne and her society intends to send to Congress. In a postscript, she states the price that she has ascertained for printing the Minutes, the address and the Appeals.
