Letter from Josephine Elizabeth Grey Butler, Liverpool, [England], to William Lloyd Garrison, May, 1874

description

Summary

Josephine Butler writes William Lloyd Garrison concerning the news she has heard regarding the proposed bill "similar to the Contagious Diseases Act" which is about to pass in the American Congress, and cautions Garrison, declaring that there will be a "long, perhaps illimitable struggle" ahead of them should the bill entrench itself within the American legal system. Butler asserts that the legislation "eats like a cancer into the morals & the liberties of the people", and makes criminals of those who choose to resist. Butler forwards a number of papers concerning the matter to Garrison and implores him to distribute them as widely as is possible.
