Letter from David Lee Child, London, [England], to George Thompson, 1836 Nov[ember] 30

description

Summary

David Lee Child writes to George Thompson thanking him for his proposal to be his guide while he is visiting England but he has to decline it. He hopes to visit him at some point but he won't be able to attend any public meeting. His travels to Europe are for a particular mission so he won't be able to participate in any of his engagements. He has marked some errors in a newspaper article Thompson sent him. He writes of the debate in Congress over whether Texas has been a part of the U.S. or if it belongs to Mexico. He argues John Quincy Adams never laid claim to the U.S. having it but newspapers supporting Andrew Jackson "are ready to create his corrupt and tyrannical behest, especially when they tend to enlarge and perpetuate slaveholding power." He writes that the abolitionist question will play an important role in this decision. He sends him pamphlets.
