Mayors discuss WPA strike situation in special session. Washington, D.C., July 14. At an extraordinary session called this morning by their president, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, the Executive Committee of the U.S. Conference of Mayors surveyed the entire strike of WPA employees throughout the country. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor LaGuardia announced that the Executive Committee would confer immediately with Commissioner Harrington on the strike situation. Legislation for sugar industry to be put up to President Roosevelt. Washington D.C., July 28. At a meeting today of 23 senators who are united in a drive to enact legislation for the sugar industry at this session of Congress, it was decided to send a committee to the White House to put the question up to President Roosevelt and determine the administration views. It was almost midnight tonight when Senators began emerging from the White House after their conference with President Roosevelt and Secretary of State Hull at which an agreement was reached to allow neutrality legislation to lie dormant until next session, thus, apparently ending a flare-up between congress and the president on the neutrality issue which began when the Senate Foreign Relations Committee refused to take up the question this session. Washington, D.C., May 9. Somewhat handicapped by the broken toe which has kept him on crutches for the past week, Speaker William Bankhead of the House today visited the White House to talk over legislation with President Roosevelt. After his conference with the President the Speaker stated that adjournment plans hinge on what happens to the Wages and Hours Bill when it reaches the Senate. Bankhead also stated that plans for bank holding compnay legislation, monopoly measures or legislation on tax exempt securities would not be encated this session, 5/9/38
