Summary

Public domain reproduction of artwork in Getty Museum, free to use, no copyright restrictions image - Picryl description

Frederic Boissonnas best known for his landscape photography, particularly of Greece and the Balkans. Boissonnas first visited Greece in 1903 and fell in love with the country, returning several times over the next few decades to capture its beauty through his lens. He also travelled extensively throughout the Balkans, documenting the people and landscapes of Albania, Serbia and Montenegro. Boissonnas pioneered the use of autochromes, an early colour photographic process that used glass plates coated with microscopic grains of potato starch dyed in three primary colours. His autochromes of Greece and the Balkans are particularly striking, capturing the vibrant colours and textures of the region. In addition to photography, Boissonnas was a mountaineer and explorer, leading expeditions to remote parts of Greece and the Balkans. He was a member of the Alpine Club of Geneva and the Royal Geographical Society. Boissonnas's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and his photographs are held in numerous public and private collections. His legacy as a photographer and explorer continues to inspire generations of artists and adventurers.
