CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Inside the Horizontal Integration Facility at Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, United Launch Alliance technicians prepare the Delta IV Heavy rocket for rollout to the pad. The rocket is secured on the Elevated Platform Transporter for the trip to the pad. The Delta IV Heavy will launch Orion on Exploration Flight Test-1. During its first flight test, Orion will travel farther into space than any human spacecraft has gone in more than 40 years. The data gathered during the flight will influence design decisions, validate existing computer models and innovative new approaches to space systems development, as well as reduce overall mission risks and costs for later Orion flights. Workers in the Space Shuttle Main Engine Processing Facility oversee the movement of a new Space Shuttle main engine (block 2 engine) toward the transport vehicle in the foreground. The engine will be moved to the Orbiter Processing Facility and installed for its first flight on the orbiter Atlantis, on mission STS-104. The Block II Main Engine configuration is manufactured by Boeing Rocketdyne in Canoga Park, Calif., and includes a new Pratt & Whitney high-pressure fuel turbo pump. The Space Shuttle program was the United States government's manned launch vehicle program from 1981 to 2011, administered by NASA and officially beginning in 1972. The Space Shuttle system—composed of an orbiter launched with two reusable solid rocket boosters and a disposable external fuel tank— carried up to eight astronauts and up to 50,000 lb (23,000 kg) of payload into low Earth orbit (LEO). When its mission was complete, the orbiter would re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and lands as a glider. Although the concept had been explored since the late 1960s, the program formally commenced in 1972 and was the focus of NASA's manned operations after the final Apollo and Skylab flights in the mid-1970s. It started with the launch of the first shuttle Columbia on April 12, 1981, on STS-1. and finished with its last mission, STS-135 flown by Atlantis, in July 2011.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In Orbiter Processing Facility Bay 3, the new orbital boom sensor system is lowered into Discovery’s payload bay. The previous boom was removed for repairs on the manipulator positioning mechanism, the pedestals that hold the boom in place in the payload bay. Discovery is the designated orbiter for the second return-to-flight mission, STS-121. The mission is scheduled no earlier than mid-May. KSC-05pd2609

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- James Stickley and Kristin Rumpf, both with United Space Alliance - Main Propulsion System Engineering, discuss procedures about welding the minute cracks on Endeavour's flow liners. Endeavour is scheduled to fly on mission STS-113 in November. The mission payload is the P1 Integrated Truss Structure, the first portside truss to go to the International Space Station, and will be attached to the central truss segment, S0, on the Station. Also additional cooling radiators will be delivered but will remain stowed until flight 12A.1. KSC-02pd1204

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- After leaving the Orbiter Processing Facility bay 2, the orbiter Endeavour, atop its transporter, rolls toward the Vehicle Assembly Building. In the VAB, it will be stacked with the external tank and solid rocket boosters atop the mobile launcher platform for its launch on mission STS-118. The mission will be Endeavour's first flight in more than four years. The shuttle has undergone extensive modifications, including the addition of safety upgrades already added to shuttles Discovery and Atlantis. Endeavour also features new hardware, such as the Station-to-Shuttle Power Transfer System that will allow the docked shuttle to draw electrical power from the station and extend its visits to the orbiting lab. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Seen through the open bay door of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, space shuttle Discovery is being prepared for its move to Orbiter Processing Facility-1 (OPF-1). Discovery is switching places with shuttle Endeavour which has been undergoing decommissioning activities in OPF-1. Both shuttles will stop briefly outside OPF-3 for a "nose-to-nose" photo opportunity. Discovery then will be rolled into OPF-1 and Endeavour into the VAB. In OPF-1, Discovery will undergo further preparations for public display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. Endeavour will be stored in the VAB until October when it will be moved into OPF-2 for further work to get it ready for public display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Workers in the Space Station Processing Facility look at the Passive Common Berthing Mechanism (PCBM) that will be attached to the Z1 integrated truss structure, a component of the International Space Station (ISS). The truss will be used for the temporary installation of the P6 truss segment to the Unity connecting module.
