CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – NASA's Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, or SCA, turns into position on the runway at the Shuttle Landing at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida with space shuttle Endeavour piggyback. Takeoff came at 7:22 a.m. EDT. The SCA, a modified 747 jetliner, will fly Endeavour to Los Angeles where it will be placed on public display at the California Science Center. The Space Shuttle program was the United States government's manned launch vehicle program from 1981 to 2011, administered by NASA and officially beginning in 1972. The Space Shuttle system—composed of an orbiter launched with two reusable solid rocket boosters and a disposable external fuel tank— carried up to eight astronauts and up to 50,000 lb (23,000 kg) of payload into low Earth orbit (LEO). When its mission was complete, the orbiter would re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and lands as a glider. Although the concept had been explored since the late 1960s, the program formally commenced in 1972 and was the focus of NASA's manned operations after the final Apollo and Skylab flights in the mid-1970s. It started with the launch of the first shuttle Columbia on April 12, 1981, on STS-1. and finished with its last mission, STS-135 flown by Atlantis, in July 2011.

US Navy (USN) Sailors aboard a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) from the USN Ticonderoga Class Guided Missile Cruiser (Aegis) USS VELLA GULF (CG 72), return to a disabled sailboat after rescuing two Dutch crew members in the Atlantic Ocean. The Ship's boarding team inspected the boat and assessed it as un-seaworthy. The boat's master requested crewmembers to retrieve the boat's papers, some personal effects and gear, then to remove the boat's bilge plugs allowing it to sink in 2,000 fathoms of water. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Space shuttle Endeavour is backed out of the Vehicle Assembly Building on its way to the Mate-Demate Device, or MDD, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The MDD is located at the Shuttle Landing Facility at Kennedy. The shuttle will be lifted and connected to the top of NASA's Shuttle Carrier Aircraft SCA, a modified 747 jetliner. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – A test version of NASA’s Orion spacecraft completed a cross-country journey at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Feb. 8, after giving residents in three states the chance to see a full scale mockup of the craft that will take humans into deep space. The E-8C is a long-range, air-to-ground surveillance system designed to locate, classify and track ground targets in all weather conditions

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- In the airlock of processing facility 1555 at Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) in California, workers monitor NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) as it is lowered onto a handling dolly. The spacecraft arrived at VAFB Jan. 27 after a cross-country trip which began from Orbital Sciences' manufacturing plant in Dulles, Va., on Jan. 24. Next, NuSTAR will be transferred from the airlock into the processing hangar, joining the Pegasus XL rocket that is set to carry it to space. After checkout and other processing activities are complete, the spacecraft will be integrated with the Pegasus in mid-February and encapsulation in the vehicle fairing will follow. The rocket and spacecraft then will be flown on Orbital's L-1011 carrier aircraft to the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site at the Pacific Ocean's Kwajalein Atoll for launch in March. The high-energy X-ray telescope will conduct a census for black holes, map radioactive material in young supernovae remnants, and study the origins of cosmic rays and the extreme physics around collapsed stars. Endeavour moved from Bay 2 of the Orbiter Processing Facility to switch places with Atlantis which had been in the VAB. Endeavour will undergo final preparations for its cross-country ferry flight targeted for mid-September. The work is part of Transition and Retirement of the remaining space shuttles, Endeavour and Atlantis. Endeavour is being prepared for public display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Endeavour was the last space shuttle added to NASA’s orbiter fleet. Over the course of its 19-year career, Endeavour spent 299 days in space during 25 missions.
