description

Summary

Kirk Mantay, GreenTrust Alliance director of operations, speaks to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District personnel, during a site visit to Mattawoman Creek in Charles County, Maryland, Sept. 24, 2019. Mattawoman Creek is the initial site to be restored through the first Umbrella Mitigation Banking Instrument for the Department of Defense in Maryland. Mattawoman Creek yields nearly 38 wetland credits and almost 1,600 stream credits to provide potential mitigation for planned construction efforts on Joint Base Andrews, such as runway construction or expansion. More than 80 acres of land at the Mattawoman Creek mitigation site is now permanently protected via a conservation easement held by GreenTrust Alliance. The land was previously privately owned farmland. Baltimore District managed the efforts of GreenVest and Princeton Hydro to complete the design; engineering and modeling; and permitting of the Mattawoman site. (U.S. Army photo by Sarah Lazo)
