King County trout hatchery showing dam & trap, ca 1915 (MOHAI 5331)

description

Summary

In the early days of the 20th century, King County opened three fish hatcheries to raise salmon and trout. The hatcheries were located at Tokul Creek, in the Snoqualmie watershed, Soos Creek, in the Green River watershed, and Seward Park, on the eastern shore of Lake Washington. Fisheries workers restocked area streams and lakes with young fish raised at the hatcheries.

This photographic postcard, probably made in the 1910s, shows a dam and trap at a King County trout hatchery. According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, this particular hatchery was probably on Tokul Creek, below Snoqualmie Falls. The state still runs a trout hatchery at the site.
