Jethro Sumner was Colonel of the 3rd NC Regiment, 1776-80, and was ultimately elevated to the rank of Brigadier General. He was not present at the battle of Guilford Courthouse but was on detached duty near Hillsborough. He was reburied here from Warren County in 1891.
