Jean in a black hat, second state
Summary
The artist's younger daughter. (Bellows) / The little girl posing in costume for her father was later to become a professional actress. During World War II Jean toured with the U.S.O. overseas, and was later in several New York plays, one of which starred Helen Hayes. Captivated by the idea of a beautiful girl in a black hat, Bellows probably did this final portrait of daughter Jean, at age eight or nine, shortly before his death (Mason).
