II. Celebes is traversed from south to north by a rangeof volcanic mountains; that range which connects thewhole East Indian system with the system of Mindanaoand the Philippines, by means of a host of scattered isletsof granite, which rise from a profoundly deep sea. Thislong chain pushes out a subsidiary range along thepeninsula dividing the Bays of Tomini and Boni. Thenorthern portion of the island is the more mountainous, although the isolated peaks are not so high ; thus GunungKalabat, at the northern extremity of the range, attains aheight of 6,560 feet only, while Lompo Batang in theextreme south attains a height of 10,000 feet. Althoughthe mountains of Celebes have proved their volcanicorigin by frequent earthquakes, no active volcanoes havebeen observed in either Celebes or Borneo.
