OF THE nuMHtSfTY SHORES OF LA GO FUCINO TO THE PONTINE MARSHES. 325 landscape in its silence and solitude has somewhat of the mystery of a sacred grove. On the summit of Monte Cavo, we stand before the consecrated portal of a PassionistConvent, from the shrill sound of whose jangling bells, the old gods fly deep intothe woods. Within the eighteenth century the ancient temple was still standing intolerably good preservation ; but then monkish superstition suppressed it, and that bymeans of an Englishman, Cardinal York, the last of the Stuarts, who erected the uglymonastery on the site of the beautiful temple, and dedicated it to the Trinity.

GENZAXO ON THE LAKE OF NEMI. One cannot but regret this barbarous destruction, in looking at the mighty antiqueblocks which form the substructure of the convent, and enclose a dreary garden wheretomatoes are cultivated to flavour the monks macaroni. On the eastern side of the hillstand huge beeches and elms, whose roots are twined around many a fragment of thetemple, and against whose stems we may lean and dream ourselves back into pastcenturies. The branches rustle mysteriously, Venuss turtle-doves coo tenderly amongstthe odorous foliage, and the noise of the modern workaday world is far away. Betweenthe trees and shrubs you can get views over the whole of Latium: nay, if the day be clear, you may see the islands of Sardinia and Corsica floating hazily in the sunset light. The 326 ITALY. Mediterranean glitters golden, and its coasts stretch southward in fine soft outlines beyondthe headland of Circe. We might name a thousand names that are written in the ancienthistories, and the more
