Sir GeorgeCalvert, Lord Baltimore,was a Protestant whobecame a Catholic con-vert. He asked the King,who had given him thetitle of Lord Baltimore,for a grant of land inAmerica where his fellowCatholics could go andpractice their religion inpeace. This the Kingpromised, but Calvertdied before getting it.His eldest son Cecil, thesecond Lord Baltimore,received the grant and acharter for a colony and,in 1634, sent out a com-pany under his brother,Leonard Calvert. He called the territory Maryland, afterthe name of the Queen, Henrietta Maria (Mary). 57
