Incipit of Luke's Gospel from BL Add 40618, f. 23

description

Summary

The script is an eighth-century Irish minuscule. The original decorated initial has been erased (traces of its interlace can still be seen) and a 'modern' initial Q painted over it as part of a programme of modernisation of an eighth-century Irish pocket Gospelbook perhaps carried out at Winchester for King Athelstan. Image taken from f. 23 of Gospel Book, imperfect (Vulgate version, Irish textual family) (index New Testament, Bible). Written in Latin.
