Hummingbird feeding, Mesa Verde National Park, 2015.
Summary
Mesa Verde National Park participates in several migratory bird monitoring projects, including 'Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship' (MAPS) and another project through the 'Hummingbird Monitoring Network' (HMN). Hummingbirds are New World birds of the Trochilidae family. The smallest extant bird species is, probably not surprisingly, a hummingbird: the 5-cm bee hummingbird that weighs less than a U.S. penny! Typically, hummingbirds wing-flap at a rate of around 50 times per second which allows them to fly at speeds exceeding 34 mph, backwards. Given this, it should come as no surprise that hummingbirds have the highest metabolism of any homeothermic (i.e., animals that maintain a stable internal body temperature regardless of external influence) animal.
