ey had no-thing to fear from the enemys vessels, which thenblocked up all the Spanish ports; but they had scarcelyreached the narrow channel between the continent andthe little rocky isles, when, to their great suprise, theymet an armed boat, which, hailing them at a greatdistance off, fired some musket-shots at them. Thisboat belonged to a privateer of Halifax; and, in spiteof their passjDorts and endeavours to give explanation,they were carried on board the privateer as a lawfulprize. But while Humboldt was engaged with thecaptain in the cabin, in endeavouring to defend his ownrights and those of the proprietor of the lancha, (openboat,) in which they had set out, a noise was heardupon deck, and something being whispered to thecaptain, he retired in consternation. Humboldt was rery politely treated by themidshipman, and invited on board the Hawk, wherehe was received with the utmost kindness by CaptainJohn Oarnier, R.N., who told him that he had madethe voyage to the north-west coast with Vancouver,and who appeared to be highly interested in all thatwas related to him, of the great cataracts of Aturesand Maypures, and the communication of the Orinocowith the Amazon. Captain Garnier mentioned seve-ral of his of&cers who had been with Lord Macartneyin China. Humboldt had not, he says, for a year,enjoyed the society of so many well-informed persons.They had learnt from the English newspapers the ob-jects of his enterprise.
