Hoarfrost, Curecanti National Recreation Area, 2014.
Summary
Deposits of ice crystals on objects exposed in air, like these plants, can produce hoarfrost. It is formed by direct condensation of water vapor to ice at below freezing temperatures when the surrounding air is brought to its frost point. Below freezing temperatures don't guarantee hoarfrost. However, for hoarfrost to occur the air must be initially moist enough so that when it cools it is saturated. Further saturation causes condensation and hence, hoarfrost. Recognize this phenomenon by its unusually large ice crystals.
