ty of purpose in all his business transactions,soon won the confidence of the citizens ; his trade increased,and he remained a merchant in Springfield for over half acentury, with a steady and successful business career. Mr. Blake refers with pride to his connection with the can find only one—Edmund Allen—who contributed withhim to the erection of the First Church. Mr. Blake is now in his ninety-fifth year, and resides onState Street, where he built his residence in 1819. Forhis second wife he married, in the year 1854, Miss ChloeBliss, of Springfield, who is some fourteen years his junior. Few men live to be as old, and fewer at such an age areable to give facts in detail for a sketch. Mr. Blake deserves notice for his valor in the captureof some burglars who had made several depredations inSpringfield, and had eluded the officials. In this matter heplanned and carried into execution the arrest of the thieves,—Stevens and Ball,—both of whom were sent to State-prison for life.
