Summary
Portrait of an Unknown Gentleman. Black and coloured chalks, pen and brush and Indian ink, heightening with white bodycolour, on pink-primed paper, 27.4 × 19.1 cm, Royal Collection, Windsor Castle. The drawing has been greatly retouched, particularly on and around the ear, beard, side-whiskers, moustache, and hat (Parker, p. 48).
Hans Holbein the Younger was a German painter and printmaker who worked in a Northern Renaissance style, and is considered one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century. He also produced religious art, satire, and Reformation propaganda, and he made a significant contribution to the history of book design.
