Haddam Neck Nuclear Power Plant, New and Spent Fuel Building, 362 Injun Hollow Road, Haddam, Middlesex County, CT

Significance: The Haddam Neck Nuclear Power Plant was one of the earliest commercial-scale nuclear power stations in the United States, and was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The new and spent fuel building was an essential component of the plant where new fuel rods were stored and spent fuel rods were stored during and after refueling. Handling of radioactive materials was mechanized and remotely controlled. Spent fuel rods were placed in a pool of water to moderate radiation and remove heat until their ultimate transfer to concrete casks.
