Mediterranean Sea (Jun. 16, 2004) Gunner's Mate 3rd Class Marc Gent, from Norman, Okla., fires at target boxes using an MK-38 25mm Machine Gun System (MGS) aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3). The 25mm MGS is an automatic gun system that provides ships with a defensive and offensive gunfire capability for the engagement of a variety of surface targets. It is designed to provide close range defense against patrol boats, swimmers, floating mines, and various targets ashore including enemy personnel, lightly armored vehicles and terrorist threats. Kearsarge is surge deployed to transport elements of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to the Central Command Area of Responsibility (AOR) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and the global war on terrorism.
