Guillaume Lacroix, the consul general of France in Chicago, thanks retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Edwin “Gene” Neeley for helping liberate France in World War II during a Legion of Honor award ceremony in Peoria Heights, Ill., Sept. 27, 2019. Neeley served with the Army Air Corps’ 2nd Replacement Depot before becoming one of the founding members of the Illinois Air National Guard’s 169th Fighter Squadron.
