Significance: Great Captain Island Lighthouse is significant as an example of lighthouse construction techniques of the period immediately following the Civil War. Among its distinctive characteristics are standardized design, with combined masonry dwelling and cast iron tower. The lighthouse is also significant for tis role in the historical development of commercial navigation on Long Island Sound and the maritime heritage of Connecticut's southwestern corner.
