Government and railroad officials inspect the new model boxcar petroleum carrier designed to help the oil shortage in the East. It is estimated by officials of the Office of Defense Transportation that one thousand such cars could add more than 15,000 barrels to the daily receipts of petroleum by rail in the East

New type of boxcar petroleum carrier which the Office of Defense Transportation hopes may soon be helping to solve the oil shortage in the East. The car is a standard automobile-type steel box car fitted with four steel tanks enclosed in wooden boxes. It has a capacity of 12,200 gallons--considerably more than the average tank car serving the East

Tank cars, vital link in wartime domestic oil transport; with railroads breaking all-time traffic records, they are still able to give valuable service in hauling the tank cars of the oil companies from Gulf Coast and Texas fields. But only a fraction of the required tank cars are available. Railroads are hauling 500,000 barrels daily, hope for 800,000 as more cars can be made available for movement to the East. But this still would be only half of the normal civilian requirement

Transportation. Tank cars. This train of tank cars on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad illustrates the new plan for solid-train movement of oil. The plan cuts down the time consumed in the previous turn-around of tank car equipment, making more cars available to haul oil to the East

While taking a tour of the Bayji, Iraq oil refinery, Deputy Prime Minister of Oil Chalibi and COL. Phil Parker, Strategic Operations, discuss the specifications of a railroad tanker car on March 22, 2006. Chalibi and Coalition dignitaries visit was to conduct an assesment of the refinery and see what steps should be taken to more efficiently distribute gas products throughout the country. Tankers. Tankers left Gulf points for the Eastern seaboard at the rate of one every eighty minutes. Loading dock hoses like these serve a fleet of 300 vessels. An average tanker carries as much oil as 280 railroad tank cars, requiring four trains, four locomotives. Ships could haul oil for one cent a barrel as against necessary railroad rates of four cents. Low marine rates left no incentive for railroads or pipelines to equip themselves for transporting Eastern petroleum requirements

Tire recapping. A recap job on a passenger car tire. The tire with a tread strip of reclaimed camelback rubber is put into a curing mold. The old tread surface had previously been ground down evenly and coated with rubber adhesive. The plan to recap passenger tires with reclaimed rubber camelback, approved by rubber director William M. Jeffers, was put into effect in February 1943 to reduce the demand for replacement tires and still keep civilian cars in service

In time of war there is no excuse for carelessness, and it is carelessness that is responsible for the loss of most tire mileage. Running into a curb can mean a break in the tire wall, or at least a weakening. Blowouts are more apt to occur when these sidewalls are in bad condition
