Karl Gustav Helmer Bäckström, born September 8, 1891, in Stockholm, died April 21, 1964, in Engelbrekt parish in Stockholm, was appointed Sweden's first professor of photography in 1948, at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. He wrote several introductory books in photography and film and was editor of the multi-volume work Fotografisk handbook (1958). Bäckström was a practicing photographer and photo collector. His collection of cameras and photographic equipment can be found at the Technical Museum in Stockholm.
