Giovanni Di Dondi clock - Public domain drawing

description

Summary

Drawing of Giovanni De Dondi's astronomical clock, built 1379, Padua, Italy. It was weight driven This may be the earliest known drawing of a balance wheel (crown shaped, at top) and a verge escapement (wheel under it). The balance wheel had a beat of 2 seconds. Originally from Giovanni de Dondi, 'Il Tractatus Astarii', 1379. This is a modern tracing of an illustration in a 1461 manuscript at Oxford (MS Laud. Misc. 620 Folio 10). The original illustration can be seen here: Whitrow, Gerald (1989) Time in History, p.106. I copied it from the website, Engines of our Ingenuity, part 1535, Inventing the Clock.
