Summary
De jonge Giovanni de Medici, bijgenaamd 'dalle Bande Nere', wordt tijdens een straatgevecht op de Engelenbrug omsingeld door leden van de Orsini-familie. Hij slaat wild om zich heen met zijn zwaard en jaagt de belegeraars op de vlucht. Rechts vlucht een gezin weg van de onveilige situatie. De standbeelden aan het begin van de brug verbeelden Paulus en Petrus. In de ondermarge twee regels tekst in het Latijn. Linksonder is het nummer 1 met pen veranderd in 4. De prent maakt deel uit van een album.
Printmaking in woodcut and engraving came to Northern Italy within a few decades of their invention north of the Alps. Engraving probably came first to Florence in the 1440s, the goldsmith Maso Finiguerra (1426–64) used the technique. Italian engraving caught the very early Renaissance, 1460–1490. Print copying was a widely accepted practice, as well as copying of paintings viewed as images in their own right.
