Stereoview shows a group of African American children of all ages posed in front of their schoolhouse in Beaufort, South Carolina. The Caucasian women standing behind them on the steps of the building are their teachers who had come to the Port Royal area as missionaries.

Handwritten caption on another copy of this stereograph from an anonymous collection not held by LC: Freed people's school, Beaufort, S.C., no. 1, formerly young ladies seminary.
